I, Laura Almond, from this day on, will only eat cake if it is completely delicious, homemade and irresistible. All other cake, by definition falls into the category – 'resistible', so it shouldn’t be hard to keep to. If you'd care to join me - you're in the right place.
Having always baked cakes, ever since I could work an oven, my baking really stepped up a gear when I moved to London four years ago. With all the recipe testing the proliferation of cake became more than my housemates (' waistlines) could cope with. Nostaligically thinking about those farm boxes you sometimes stumble across on country lanes, I decided to experiment with a cake honesty box outside my house in Harringay. It is quite a popular little stop for my neighbours at the weekend. For a while I tried blogging my recipes, and Beaten by a Whisker was born. But it seems I'm not cut out for churning out a different recipe every day and more into the monotony of perfecting the ULTIMATE brownie - not quite so interesting on the Instagram feed (much as I do love a gooey-ness closeup!). So consequently, you won't find many cakes on this website, but each one has been tested and refined, tested and refined, and if by then, we were bored of it, it probably didn't make the cut.
